Card Collection 1

There’s a unique sort of richness in the greeting card adverts of Leipzig, a mass of originality, style, sometimes randing on kitsch, but always surprising. It’s quite unheard of in where I usually live, so it was an opportunity to see how graphic design is done in Europe without having to dish out money on a thick book.

It’s evolving, it’s fresh and it’s something to admire. I’ve been collecting cards short of three months now and will be sharing some of my finds here.

One of the instantly recognisable designs is the Staubsauger club, where the style and shape remains unchanged for many incarnations of cards.

This club also follows a recurring theme, but look at how elegantly the colours are selected!

Some cards border on the budget and are printed out rather cheaply, but that doesn’t make them lose their charm. The hand-drawn quality only adds to it. They’re usually printed on coloured paper to give the card a splash of colour using, otherwise black, ink.

Check out the back side to the pink flyer.
Some cards are tiny business cards with artwork on both sides.

Some cards are pretty black and white, with minimal use of colours.

This was a whole series of cards, I could only found two of them.

Not all cards are postcard-shaped! This size is also popular.
